Peter Heaps has been involved in many technical aspects of television for nearly 50 years for both the BBC and ITN, as well as a stint for the Carolina channel WUNC-TV.
Currently freelancing, some of the many notable events in Peter’s career include: RTS (Royal Television Society) award winner for his coverage of the Iran Embassy siege in 1980; coverage of the release of the US hostages in Frankfurt in 1981; coordination of the ITV network coverage of the Papal visit in 1983; presentation of the first live pictures of the Queen’s visit to the Great Wall of China in 1986; and coverage of the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster (1987), the release of Nelson Mandela (1990), the first post-invasion interview with Saddam Hussein (1990), the El Al air crash in Amsterdam (1992) and the sinking of the Achille Lauro (1994).
He was deservedly awarded an MBE for Services to Broadcasting in 1994.
